Artist Statement

"Stories of the natural world, its beauty, and current imbalance inform my work. I use ceramics, glass, painting, and printmaking processes to tell an environmental story. I find inspiration in fungi, seed pods, ferns, and all the forms that can be found in the Appalachian woods. I have been working and thinking about water since my town, Charleston, WV, had an environmental water crisis in 2014. The emphasis in my practice on water was also impacted by the “thousand year flood” of the Elk River in which so many died. Large pallet sculptures, small ceramics, and cast glass pieces reflect the jumble of trees, houses, and debris that were found along the Elk River. A series of glass animals on poles are my commentary on global warming and the effect it has had on our forest animals. To me everything is upside down right now and needs to be righted."
