Mr. Simpson. He has always acted as a resource and someone who I can talk to if need be. He's a great teacher and an even greater advisor.

What was your most memorable experience at Shipley?
My most memorable experience at Shipley was being able to go abroad to Italy for over a week, back when I was in eighth grade.

What does Courage for the Deed; Grace for the Doing mean to you?
It means putting yourself in a situation that could make you uncomfortable because you know that it is necessary and/or you will be a better person because of it.

Complete this sentence: Shipley has prepared me to…
…look outside of the obvious and try and find a deeper meaning in all the things I come across.

Reflections on your time at Shipley:
When I first came to Shipley, I was terrified of public speaking. At my old school, one of the only times I ever did public speaking, led to me having a panic attack and hiding in a corner. Shipley, through its small class size and strong support structure allowed me to slowly come out of my shell. As the years went by, and I had to do more and more public speaking, I realized, that it progressively became something that I am comfortable doing. I still might get nervous or maybe speak a bit fast when I do public speaking, but the fact of the matter is, it become something that I can live with, as opposed to something that I went out of my way to avoid. Public speaking is just one way that Shipley helped me become the person I am today, but there are others.

Another way in which Shipley has had an impact on my life is in how I have developed as a writer. When I first came to Shipley, I was frankly a terrible writer: I had no sense of style, my grasp on grammar was atrocious, I didn't know what a topic sentence was, and I had never heard the words "passive voice" in my life. Shipley was a wake-up call for me because it showed me how much farther I had to go to get my writing up to scuff and then it helped me get it up to scuff. At this point in time, I'm still not the best writer in the world, but I am honestly proud of how far I've come. Some of the works I've produced this year are works that I can honestly be proud of and looking back, Shipley has helped me so much with my writing.
