Meet Ella '22

Name: Ella Nevo
Years at Shipley: 6
Attending in the Fall: University of Pennsylvania
Major/Area of Interest: Biomedical Engineering

Activities:
Executive Council Representative (Grades 9,10, and 12); Orchestra; Varsity Squash (captain senior year)

Who was your most influential teacher and why?
Dr. Gillin was my most influential teacher because she taught me how to make every sentence that I wrote meaningful and how to critically think about topics and history. Before her class, history was often my least favorite class, but she was so passionate about what she was teaching that it made me want to engage with the material too.

What was your most memorable experience at Shipley?
I decided to enter the Halloween costume contest during my senior year and ended up winning first place.

What does Courage for the Deed; Grace for the Doing mean to you?
This motto, for me, means to accept challenges and go after goals.

Complete this sentence: Shipley has prepared me to…
...critically think through all problems.

Reflections on your time at Shipley:
Shipley had so many different activities and classes to choose from, which wasn't something I was used to at my old school, so I found myself trying many new things. Some of these things didn't work out as well, like my attempt to play field hockey, but others, like playing flute, I will continue after Shipley. I think Shipley offers lots of opportunities to those who are willing to take them, and it is just up to the student to try new things and find what interests them. Similarly, Shipley's honors courses prepare students very well for college-level courses, but it is up to the individual student to challenge themselves within those courses without overwhelming their workload.
In terms of the people at Shipley, I think Shipley attracts both students and teachers who are genuinely nice and kind people and who want to help others. I find that there is very little exclusion and the administration is working very hard to keep it that way. Overall, I am very happy that I decided to go to Shipley because it allowed me to try new things and have amazing teachers that I will remember for the rest of my life.
