"Double-Sided Exposure" by Christian Breed '00

Christian Breed '00 received his BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design in 2004. He has recently returned to New York after ten years of working in Italy, where his works are in both public and private collections, and have been exhibited in both galleries and public institutions. He is currently enrolled in the MFA Program at CUNY Hunter College.

Artist Statement:
Christian Breed attended The Shipley School from 1990-2000, and this exhibition is an interaction between the artist's work and this institutional space from his past. The build-up and wrinkling of the paint in these works is akin to the residue of experience; the paint forms a luminescent structure upon which light is reflected. This sensitivity to light gives the painting a certain openness, allowing it to interact with the light and color of a place in the immediate present. Thus, these works are both rooted in the experience of the artist and in the present moment of the space in which they are shown. As a result, they become platforms for a direct dialogue between the artist's memories of a place and that place's immediate present.
