Welcome to Shipley! While I hope you enjoy learning about our community virtually, I encourage you to schedule a visit
with us or attend one of our many wonderful events.
I can still remember my first visit to Shipley over 20 years ago. I was impressed then with the School’s mission:
The Shipley School, a Pre-Kindergarten through 12 coeducational day school, is committed to educational excellence and dedicated to developing in each student a love of learning and a compassionate participation in the world.
Today, I remain not only impressed, but also grateful to have been a part of this community that delivers on its mission every day. I have observed this firsthand as our three children, now Shipley graduates, have benefitted immensely in college and beyond from their Shipley experience.
Shipley offers a rigorous college preparatory program and we welcome students from the age of four in our prekindergarten (or nursery school) program. Our Lower School
(elementary grades preK through 5) provides an excellent foundation and helps students develop a real love of learning. In our Middle School
(grades 6-8) we help students discover their individual strengths and passions while preparing for Upper School
. And our Upper School (grades 9-12) offers an incredible variety of rigorous courses
and a college counseling team
second to none.
I am often asked what is so special and different about Shipley. Especially with all of the wonderful educational institutions in the Philadelphia area, why Shipley? Of course, my first answer is the people – all of the wonderful colleagues who teach, coach, and inspire our kids, as well as the students, parents, alumni, and other members of this community. But then I say that the people and the relationships are just the root of the Shipley Method. Because our teachers know our students as learners and as people, students develop the confidence to explore, to try things a bit out of their comfort zone, and to develop competence and confidence. We also require creativity in all – at Shipley, learning is an interactive, interdisciplinary, and challenging process and students need creativity to find solutions in all areas. We believe this process leads to deeply rooted learning – to the development of skills like critical thinking, analysis, collaboration, and communication that we know are necessary for success in college and beyond.
I welcome you to learn more about my thoughts on education and Shipley in the brief video below. I also invite you to peruse the monthly letters I share with the Shipley community for additional insight into what we do and why. As you get to know Shipley, you will learn that while we are a school dedicated to great outcomes (academic and otherwise), we also believe deeply in the process and the way our students learn and develop passion and compassion. I encourage you to get in touch with us directly
and I look forward to meeting you.
