Young Alumni Award Presented to Katie Ermilio '04 May 2, 2014

The Young Alumni Award recognizes a Shipley alumna or alumnus who has graduated within the preceding 25 years and demonstrates innovation, curiosity, and creativity in the pursuit of excellence in a particular field, whether it be in a profession, through formal volunteer activities unrelated to the School, or through personal commitment to an issue, project, or cause.
Innovation, curiosity, and creativity are Katie Ermilio’s birthright. This 2004 Shipley graduate is the granddaughter of the personal clothier for Grace Kelly, Princess of Monaco, and her father, Robert Ermilio, is the owner, President, and CEO of Ermilio Clothiers in Haverford, designer of both General Dwight D. Eisenhower’s bomber jacket and the famed Green Jacket of golf’s Masters Tournament. With, or perhaps in spite of, her family’s history in the business, Katie may soon be the most famous member of the Ermilio family.
Katie showed hints of her future career in the fashion world at the tender age of 12, creating her own dress for an eighth grade dance. After Shipley, Katie graduated with honors from New York University, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Visual Culture. She also spent time dressing her father’s clients and creating displays in his storefront window. Katie later served as an intern at Vogue and then spent some time working at Teen Vogue before leaving to focus on designing clothes. In 2013, less than 10 years after she graduated from Shipley, Katie was listed as one of Forbes Magazine’s “30 under 30” in Art and Design.
Katie’s creations have been featured in publications such as ELLE, The New York Times, Vanity Fair, Vogue, The Wall Street Journal, Women’s Wear Daily, and others. Her clothing is sold in the finest boutiques worldwide, including in countries as distant as Australia and Dubai, and has been worn by celebrities such as Kate Bosworth, Katy Perry, Taylor Swift, and Michelle Williams. Most recently, Oscar-winning actress Nicole Kidman was photographed in one of Katie’s designs for the March 2014 issue of In Style magazine.
Katie was recently selected to participate in the prestigious Fashion Incubator program of the Council of Fashion Designers of America, not only testament to her rising star in the world of fashion, but also the reason she cannot accept her award in person. Already well aware of her talent and potential, we cheer Katie onward in her pursuit of excellence in fashion, and we are pleased to present her with Shipley’s 2014 Young Alumni Award.
