Young Alumni Award Presented to Justin Shipley '00 May 1, 2015

The Young Alumni Award recognizes a Shipley alumna or alumnus who has graduated within the preceding 25 years and demonstrates innovation, curiosity, and creativity in the pursuit of excellence in a particular field, whether it be in a profession, through formal volunteer activities unrelated to the School, or through personal commitment to an issue, project, or cause.

Justin Shipley, Class of 2000, entered Shipley in the 8th grade. From the moment he arrived he gravitated to the arts where he made notable contributions to the stage and the visual arts. Bright, clever and tenacious, Justin had a critical eye, a passion for art, and something to say. Art Department Head, Steve Baris remembers Justin's early enthusiasm and prodigious skills with the relatively new computer-aided design component of the art program. "He developed an exceptionally sophisticated portfolio which was a key factor in helping him launch his early career in graphic design and film."

After graduation, Justin moved to Los Angeles in order to pursue a career in film where ingenuity and hard work landed him a position as a design and production assistant at a graphic design agency. Using his first job as a launching pad, Justin went on to work on a documentary filmed in the Southern Highlands of Ethiopia and eventually performed other roles, including filming elements for graphics packages, editing television shows, and designing and laying out pitch books.

In 2011, Justin was the Director of Photography and Editor on “The Horsemen Cometh,” a web documentary following the world’s only P-51 Mustang formation aerobatic team. For his work on this film, Justin was nominated for an Emmy Award for Outstanding Cinematography, an impressive feat in the first year that web content was allowed to compete against television content for an Emmy.

Justin now works with a number of Philadelphia, Los Angeles, and Houston-based companies on creative content and technical consultancy, while also pursuing opportunities on his own that often take him around the world. He fuels his craft with the motivation to make things he is proud of.

Shipley is proud of Justin and his work, and we are pleased to present him with the 2015 Young Alumni Award.
