Meet our Student Ambassadors

Meet Thomas '20

Activities & Positions:
I was lucky enough to be a part of the Honors Jazz Combo where I played the drums and led the band during rehearsals and performances. I was also on the varsity lacrosse team and a fundamental part of the defense for the second year.

Favorite Club:
My favorite club is Action Research because of its mission to make Shipley's community stronger. We get to interact with both the students of Shipley and the faculty of Shipley to educate and change the school community on fundamental issues.

Favorite Class:
My favorite class at Shipley was my American Studies class last year because my teachers, Ms. Gearhart, and Mr. Addis, allowed the class to discuss important issues and supported further research into topics openly. I also loved the class because both teachers cared so much about how we attacked an assignment and made sure that every student in the class knew how to execute a paper before the year was over. I have always had a passion for history, and American Studies was a fantastic class to take.

Favorite Shipley Memory:
My favorite Shipley memory was of last years Super Saturday, where we came together as a community to support our fall sports teams. When I think of Shipley, I think about how active its community is. As a fellow athlete, I cannot tell you how vital community support is, and I was blown away by how embracing our community is of our athletics.

Most Valuable Lesson Learned:
The most valuable lesson I have learned at Shipley is the importance of determination. Attending one of the elite private schools in the Philadelphia area comes with strenuous days and long nights. If I had not learned to determination through the Shipley community, I would not be the student or person I am today.

Advice to New Students:
I would tell any incoming student that the more involved they are, the better. Shipley does support internal change, and students can only do that by being involved. I was not as involved as I wish I was as a Sophomore and made it my mission to be as involved as possible during my Junior year by joining more clubs and becoming a more significant member of the community. I think the best place a new student could do this is by going to as many sporting events as possible to show the Shipley community your support.
