Meet our Student Ambassadors

Meet Alyssa '20

Activities & Positions:
Going into my Senior year, I will have been a part of the Swim team for four years and will continue to serve as a captain of the Cross-Country team for my second year. I will continue my participation in the winter musicals and work on the set team for my second year and the costumes team for my third year. I will also be a member of Shipley’s gardening club, Sprouts, for my third year and be a part of the Art club for my second year. Additionally, I will participate in the Harvard Model Congress for my third year and work on Shipley’s student newspaper, The Beacon, as a head graphic and layout editor.

Favorite Club:
My favorite club is definitely the Sprouts Club! In Sprouts, we create beautiful floral and plant arrangements that are displayed in the Philadelphia Flower Show and around campus. The Sprouts club provides its members with a calm and supportive environment during the hectic school year. Additionally, the entire club travels to the Philadelphia Convention Center to set up and submit our work prior to the start of the Flower Show. This day is filled with positivity and excitement as we get to see the result of all our hard work throughout the year!

Favorite Class:
My favorite class at Shipley has been Studio Art II Honors. I love creating in all mediums and having art class as a major class in my curriculum. The assignments had a great balance between structured prompts and freedom to experiment- both essential things to the creative process. This class really allowed me to develop my foundational skills while exploring new materials and techniques.

Favorite Shipley Memory:
When I think of Shipley, I think of the many enthusiastic and distinct communities that exist within the larger body. From sports to the arts, every niche group works hard to be the best they can be. Every member in the musical (on stage and off) devotes their time and energy to perfect their role and contribution to the group, and the same can be said for the Sprouts club, The Beacon, and every other community on the Shipley campus.

Most Valuable Lesson Learned:
The most valuable lesson I have learned at Shipley is that it’s okay to not simply fit into one box. I have many different interests that, at first glance, do not cohesively fit together. However, through activities and clubs, I have been allowed to pursue many of them and I believe that each interest makes up my identity.

Advice to New Students:
I recommend new students to try out all the activities and clubs that interest them, even if you have not mastered or experienced them before. Upper School is a great time to explore your interests and pursue the things that you’re passionate about! A useful tip is when doing math homework at school, always work in the Math Center! Even if there is not a teacher or tutor scheduled for that time, teachers will always be passing through and you can ask quick questions.
