Meet our Student Ambassadors

Meet Lilla '27

How long have you been at Shipley?
One year, since Fourth Grade

What have you been involved in that you really enjoyed at Shipley?
I was on Student Council last year and one of the things we did all year long was a Lower School food audit. We spent the year talking a lot about sustainability, recycling, composting, and how to sort waste. We did a waste audit and talked about how we can do this better. That led to the composting we are now doing in the Lower School. There are composting buckets on the tables in the lunchroom and large containers outside. We really worked as a team – I like working as a team.

I really enjoyed the 4th-grade colonial models project. We each had our own sections, but we had to collaborate to make it all work. I built the Church for our New England colony – it’s a central building for that model. Working together to show what we learned was fun and helped us learn more.

Do you have a favorite subject?
I have a lot of favorite subjects! I really like math. We just finished a unit on fractions – multiplying and dividing them. I enjoy doing a lot of different things with fractions. Our teacher is really good at teaching us and keeping things interesting for us.

What is your favorite Special?
Innovation (makerspace) is a mix between science and technology. We have a project that we can explore – right now we are making something that has to be intended for someone else. We are given guidelines, but we have a lot of room to be creative. At the end of each project, we have an evaluation period where we can determine how well our project did and what we might do differently next time. It’s a great space for the class to work together, but also for some creative, independent time.

What clubs are you in?
I am in the tennis club. We usually start with volleys – we have fun and we learn. I’ve developed a lot of confidence in my tennis skills, even though I knew how to play it before I came into the club.

What are you looking forward to in Middle School?
I am looking forward to choosing a different modern language. I know the choices are French, Mandarin, and Spanish, and I think I might choose French since I have had Spanish for the past six years.

What advice would you give to new students coming into Shipley?
Be open to everyone as new friends! Be free to make your own choices and take risks because even if you fail, people will be very encouraging and tell you to keep going.
