Rod Kellett - Fourth Grade Lead Teacher

As a learning community, we strongly support a differentiated learning environment. By having two teachers in the room, we are able to fully sustain that culture by supporting multiple learning styles.

  • What do you enjoy most about being in the classroom?

I have always enjoyed supporting and challenging each student as they discover their personal learning styles and who they are as they grow.

  • What do you love about Shipley?

I have always loved how Shipley comes together as a community to support each other, and by creating an environment that allows each student and colleague to be comfortable with who they and what their talents are.

  • What inspired you to choose education?

I had a teacher in high school who I consider to this day to be my mentor. Because of him, I set a personal goal each year that each student I work with is able to remember that I taught him or her something. Whether it was to tie their shoes, a lesson in math or language arts, or how to properly strike a golf ball. I challenge myself to teach them in a way that they will always remember that they learned it from me.

  • What is your favorite lesson, project or activity? Why?

My favorite activity is reading groups. When we read, not only do we focus on comprehension, fluency, and vocabulary, but we teach creativity and have a ton of fun with how we present our lessons. A goal is to teach students to enjoy reading. If I can make it fun for them at school, I hope that it becomes fun for them at home.

  • Are you married and/or have children?

I am married to a Shipley Alumna, Class of 1989. We have four children. My youngest daughter is a 4th generation Shipley student.

  • Why is it important to have two teachers in the classroom?

As a learning community, we strongly support a differentiated learning environment. By having two teachers in the room, we are able to fully sustain that culture by supporting multiple learning styles.
  • Do you have any pets?

I have an 85-pound black lab named Bear.

  • Name one of your hobbies.

    Golf.

  • What is your favorite musical genre?

I enjoy a combination of rock and bluegrass.

  • What is your favorite season?

All of them. I love the fact that we live in an area where we are able to enjoy such different weather patterns throughout the year. Each season brings something new and keeps us on our toes.
