Your gift to Shipley will help create the next Renée:
Renée graduated from Shipley in 2001, attended Brown University, and earned her medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania.
“I feel incredibly grateful for my experience at Shipley. It was at Shipley that I met my husband, developed some of my deepest friendships, and experienced the joy that comes from learning. I would like to say that there was one particular subject that stands out, but the truth is that they all do. I completed my Senior Service Project with an organization that provided resources to patients with HIV-AIDS as well as their caregivers. With this experience fresh in my mind, I matriculated at Brown, where I concentrated on Ethnic Studies, completed my premedical studies, and wrote my thesis on HIV-AIDS activism. I wanted to become a patient-advocate from within the walls of the hospital and with a stethoscope in my hand.”
Upon graduating from Penn, Renée entered a medical residency program, where she continues to pursue her goals.
“Now I’m completing my residency at San Francisco General Hospital, where I have the privilege of practicing the arts of medicine and advocacy for the underserved population of San Francisco. Every day, I speak the Spanish that I learned at Shipley with my patients; I research and analyze information with writing and analytical skills that I developed at Shipley; and I communicate about my patients with the poise and confidence that Shipley’s theater program instilled in me.
I benefit every day from the opportunities that Shipley created for me; it’s the jumping off point for the successes I've had in life.”
