Young Alumni Award - Presented to Thomas Van Dyck '99 May 3, 2019

In 2013, the Boston Symphony Orchestra (BSO) welcomed a new member to its esteemed ensemble when Thomas Van Dyck joined the double bass section. Chosen from among more than 200 bassists vying for the position, Tom’s varied musical background and commitment to doing his absolute best have placed him in one of the most highly regarded bass sections in the world. Though he studied music outside of Shipley, Tom credits his Upper School experience with much of the foundation that contributed to his dedication to his craft, and he appreciates how Shipley’s focus on individual attention and the great and supportive community influenced him to think creatively and critically.

Tom’s diverse musical life began with an interest in jazz, and he chose the double bass as his instrument of choice when he joined his brother’s rock band. At age 12, Tom’s focus shifted to classical music, and after graduating from Shipley in 1999, he attended The Shepherd School of Music at Rice University, followed by fellowships with the New World Symphony and at Tanglewood Music Center and a master’s degree program at Boston University. Outside of the BSO, Tom is a frequent guest with the San Francisco, Cincinnati, Detroit, and San Diego Symphonies, and has been an Artist-teacher at the Longy School of Music and guest teacher at the New England, Boston, and San Francisco Conservatories and the Hartt School of Music. He is an avid chamber musician, serving as a member of the East Coast Chamber Orchestra and performing in premier music festivals across the country.

In recognition of Tom’s success at a young age, his courage and creativity in forging his path, and his passion in the pursuit of musical excellence, the Alumni Council named him this year’s recipient of the Young Alumni Award.
