Students Chalk Up Success to Science and a Creative Approach

“You (and a number of your competitors) have been chosen by investors to start your own chalk manufacturing business. To try to land your first big customer, you are asked to submit a price quote that details how much your business will charge to produce and deliver 1000kg of chalk...” So began an interdisciplinary lesson in Adam Goren and Tamar Norquist’s Chemistry I Honors class designed to teach students about stoichiometry—or the math behind chemical reactions.

The assignment? To produce a written price quote backed up by solid science and math and a creative video pitch for the imaginary client. “Our students did some really great work where they did the tough math and chemistry work, but also produced some dazzling and creative presentations,” said Mr. Goren. This project proved to be the perfect formula combining rigor and creativity, investing in critical skills student will need to succeed in the future.
