Who was your most influential teacher and why?
Ms. Willing was my most influential teacher because she pushed me to work my hardest and to reach out when I needed help. She was always there to support me when I didn't get something, and I will always be grateful for the different perspective she gave me on what it means to be a critical thinker.
What was your favorite class and why?
My favorite class was my first semester Senior Seminar, Honors African American Literature. We read the most amazing and important books that will stay with me for the rest of my life, and we always had meaningful projects and discussions to further our understanding as a class. Additionally, Mr. Hornung made me excited to come to class and put my best foot forward every day.
What was your most memorable experience at Shipley?
One of my most memorable experiences at Shipley was the student government retreat. All elected student government positions, whether class presidents or committee heads, went on an overnight trip to Shawnee in the Pocono Mountains. We had leadership sessions as well as plenty of fun, from canoeing through miles of river to singing by the campfire at night. I always enjoy reflecting on this Shipley memory, especially because I got to form deeper relationships with all of the students leading our school.
What does Courage for the Deed; Grace for the Doing mean to you?
To me, Courage for the Deed; Grace for the Doing means taking risks and doing the hard things even when they seem daunting or impossible, and then supporting those around you with grace, kindness, and empathy when they take a risk.
How has Shipley encouraged you to take risks?
Shipley encouraged me to take risks in many ways, but mainly through its support. When I wanted to start an initiative, I felt the constant support of my peers and teachers. With that support, even when I was scared, Shipley reinforced that it would always have my back no matter the outcome. When things succeeded, everyone was there to celebrate the small wins, and if they didn't, I had the confidence to try again because I felt so welcomed in Shipley's environment.
