THEATER
Theater is one of the most human art forms. It asks students to listen closely, take creative risks, and communicate with clarity and empathy. At Shipley, theater helps students develop confidence, discipline, and a deep sense of belonging—skills that extend far beyond the stage.
Emphasizing Process Over Perfection
Open to students of all experience levels, our Theater program emphasizes process over perfection. Whether preparing for conservatory-level training or simply discovering the joy of theater, every student has a meaningful place in the ensemble—onstage, backstage, or in a leadership role.
For some students, theater becomes a lifelong passion and professional pursuit; for others, it is a powerful chapter in their education. In all cases, students leave with greater confidence, empathy, and communication skills that extend far beyond the stage.
| Lower School |
Students are introduced to theater through classroom drama, performance opportunities, and the annual Lower School musical for fourth- and fifth-grade students. These experiences build confidence, encourage collaboration, and celebrate creativity in a joyful, inclusive environment. ![]() |
| Middle School |
The Middle School Theater program fosters belonging and self-expression. Drama is required in Grade 6 and offered as an elective in Grades 7 and 8, with opportunities for improv, recitals, and a full-scale musical every year. Auditions are reimagined as ensemble-building workshops, and the Middle School Musical follows a no-cut policy—every student who auditions performs. ![]() |
| Upper School |
Upper School students deepen their craft through three major productions each year—Fall Plays, a Winter Musical, and Spring Shakespeare. In addition to performance opportunities, students may pursue in-depth coursework in acting, technical theater, and public speaking. Leadership roles—including stage management, production support, and mentorship of younger students—allow Upper School students to take ownership of the creative process and serve as role models across divisions. ![]() |
At Shipley, theater is a powerful way for students to explore storytelling, collaboration, and self-expression.
Through performance and production, students learn to step into others’ perspectives, build confidence, and work together toward a shared creative vision.
