Portrait of a Graduate

PORTRAIT OF A GRADUATE

At Shipley, we strive for more than academic excellence. We foster students’ personal, social, and intellectual development. Our vision for Shipley graduates extends far beyond report cards, awards ceremonies, or scoreboards. It encompasses a deep commitment to shaping well-rounded humans who are equipped to thrive in an ever-changing world.

PREPARED
FOR LIFE

These seven skills reflect the intellectual, creative, and social-emotional abilities we intentionally cultivate in every Shipley student—preparing graduates to succeed in college, career, and beyond.

WHY SHIPLEY?

Choosing a school is one of the most important decisions a family makes. At Shipley, we believe the why matters as much as the what. Here, exceptional academics are just the beginning. What sets Shipley apart is the way we educate—with intention, with care, and with an unwavering belief that every child deserves to be known, challenged, and supported.

CoEd & Diverse by Design
Shipley students learn, compete, create, and lead together—across genders, perspectives, and experiences. We believe coeducation isn't just a structural choice; it's an educational one. Students who learn alongside a full spectrum of peers develop the empathy, collaboration skills, and social intelligence they'll need to thrive in college, career, community, and the world beyond Shipley.
Respect for the Individual
At Shipley, your child is never just a number. With small class sizes, caring teachers, and a commitment to knowing each student, we don't ask anyone to fit a mold—we make room for them to grow into themselves. Students here are celebrated for who they are, supported through their challenges, and prepared to perform their best.
Close Relationships & Community
At Shipley, our teachers know students as people as well as learners — and that makes for a better classroom and life experience. But it's not just the teacher-student relationships that define us. Students, alumni, families, and colleagues share connections that last long after graduation. This is a community you join for school and carry with you for life.
Challenge & Well-Being, in Balance
We refuse to choose between academic excellence and student well-being. At Shipley, they go hand-in-hand. Through our Social, Emotional, Ethical, and Development (SEED) program and Framework for Well-Being, students are given the tools to manage stress, build resilience, and show up as their best selves. We push students to grow, and we take care of them while they do it.

“Shipley taught me how to think critically and analyze effectively. A lot of writing in college is analytical, and I felt the transition from high school to college-level writing was smooth because of the amount of analysis I had done in different subjects at Shipley.”

“The most valuable skill I developed at Shipley was the ability to advocate for myself. I needed to learn how and when to ask for help and speak up on my behalf. Shipley instilled in me the confidence to do so, which has really helped me in college and now in the early stages of my career.”

"Risk-taking at Shipley wasn't about perfection—it was about growth. That mindset allowed me to embrace challenges not as setbacks, but as stepping stones toward deeper understanding and confidence."

"More important than the excellent academics and opportunities provided, Shipley has truly taught me the meaning and importance of community and what it takes to build one and be a part of one."
