Shipley Celebrates Mid-Autumn Festival

Shipley Celebrates Mid-Autumn Festival

On September 29, the Shipley community celebrated Mid-Autumn Festival, one of the most important traditional East & Southeast Asian festivals.

Throughout the afternoon, the community enjoyed Chinese tea and a tea ceremony, mooncake making, calligraphy, traditional Chinese herbs and sachet making, lantern crafts, guzheng music, poetry, and other cultural experiences. Students also had the opportunity to serve as hosts and cultural ambassadors, sharing their language learning and cultural knowledge.

A Joyful Mid-Autumn Cultural Journey: SMIC-I Connects with The Shipley School Across the Ocean

Though the bright moon is far across mountains and seas, friendship needs no distance. As the Mid-Autumn Festival arrives, our high school CSL students at SMIC-I and The Shipley School in the United States have come together for a lively cross-border classroom. The vast ocean cannot hold back the enthusiasm of these young students — through poetry, hands-on crafts, and laughter, they came together for a joyful celebration of traditional Chinese culture!

Painting the Moon with Verse

“Beyond the courtyard, the ground is white with moonlight; crows perch in the trees, and cold dew silently soaks the osmanthus.” Teachers and students from both schools read the classic poem Looking at the Moon on the Night of the Fifteenth together, savoring the Mid-Autumn romance of sending one's thoughts to the moon. As they created illustrations to accompany the poem, painting the bright moonlight and autumn feelings onto paper, they also recited the verses aloud across the distance. Their voices carried across the ocean, making this ancient Chinese poetry the finest bond of friendship between the two schools!

Crafting the Joy of Reunion

Conveying warmth through handmade creations, the fun was at its peak. The most anticipated activity — the snow skin mooncake DIY session — kicked off with great excitement. Both students from SMIC-I and the Shipley School eagerly kneaded the dough, wrapped the fillings, and pressed the molds. Students on both sides of the ocean immersed themselves in the unique culture of the Mid-Autumn reunion, truly feeling the warmth and charm that only this traditional Chinese festival can offer.

This special Mid-Autumn collaboration between the two schools brought students together across the miles — a joyful meeting and a genuine two-way exchange. Going forward, our school will continue to offer more cross-border collaborative programs like this one, sharing Chinese culture with the world and giving students the chance to broaden their horizons and grow through cross-cultural exchange.
