Outside groups or professional organizations to which you belong:
I've assisted Lexie Gerson with the Select AAU program for the last two seasons.
What attracted you to Shipley?Growing up close to the area, I've always been aware of Shipley's strong academic and athletic reputation. Shipley consistently has strong success in not only girls' basketball but also many other sports and campus activities. Shipley Girls Basketball has a strong reputation for winning and competing for championships, and also placing kids at the next level. When I got to meet the team and staff on campus, it was one of the easiest decisions of my life! Very blessed to be a part of the Shipley community.
How/why did you get into Basketball?
My entire life, sports have been a huge centerpiece for me. I loved playing, learning about the game, building camaraderie with coaches and teammates, etc. My freshman year of high school, I had a group of coaches who really devoted a lot of effort to developing me, which ignited my love for basketball specifically. I knew right then and there that I wanted to have that same impact on student-athletes. I'm very lucky and excited to be able to do that every day.
What is your coaching philosophy or style?
I love coaching and love devoting effort to developing student-athletes. I love building confidence, watching teams come together, and executing as one. I am loud, energetic, passionate, and excited for player success. I want to provide a safe and exciting environment that players want to play and practice in every day. When it comes to on-court style, defense, playing hard, and sharing the ball are the foundations for the program we will try to build. We want players to be happy for each other's successes just as much as their own. Culture is everything!
How would your players describe you?
I think most of my players would describe me as being in their corner and fair. I am often their biggest fan and supporter. When it is time for tough love, I think most times players that have played for me would tell you it's warranted and necessary. Our goal as coaches is to build high standards and help players rise to those standards, which I'm very excited about building at Shipley.
Do you have any sports heroes or inspirations? If so, who are they and why?
I have two people who have inspired me and my coaching journey. The first is Coach Jeff Sparrow, who is currently coaching overseas in New Zealand. Fresh out of college, Jeff took a chance on me to help build out his skill development company and grow. We built a fun and exciting culture in the gym every day, and Jeff taught me how to lead and teach. My other mentor is Jeff Javorek, who is currently at SPIRE Academy. For the last five years, Jeff has helped me in basically every facet of life. He's taught me how to coach better, manage player egos, be a better human, and more. Without both Jeff's, I wouldn't be the leader or person I am today, and I thank them both for that.
What do you do for fun?
I love spending time with my wife, Kaitlyn, and dog, Jax. We love going on walks, hikes, and runs. We'll be moving back to the area to be close to my niece and nephew, Kylie and Luke, and my extended family. We are ecstatic about.
Fun Fact:
Growing up, I was a baseball player. I always dreamed of being in the MLB and getting drafted. I had one coach in 9th grade devote so much to me for basketball, and the rest is history!
Anything else you’d like people to know about you:
I'd like to thank Ian Craig, Justin Cooper, Liz Denbigh, Jenna Harmelin, TJ Ferrick, Lauren Luchetti, and the entire Shipley community for taking a chance on me to be the next Girls Basketball Coach at Shipley. I do not take it lightly. Let's get to work! Go Gators!
