US Science Teacher Earns Prestigious National Board Certification

The Shipley School is proud to announce that Upper School Physics teacher and Class Dean Eliza Varner earned the prestigious National Board Certification, awarded by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS).

The National Board for Professional Teaching Standards was founded in 1987 to advance the quality of teaching and learning by:

- maintaining high and rigorous standards for what accomplished teachers should know and be able to do;
- providing a national voluntary system certifying teachers who meet these standards; and
- advocating related education reforms to integrate National Board Certification in American education and to capitalize on the expertise of National Board Certified Teachers

According to the NBPTS website, National Board Certification is "the highest certification a teacher may obtain in addition to being the most respected one."

Taking over two years to complete, Varner demonstrated excellence in teaching in NBPTS's core elements:

The Five Core Propositions

1. Teachers are committed to students and their learning
2. Teachers know the subject they teach and how to teach those subjects to students
3. Teachers are responsible for managing and monitoring student learning
4. Teachers think systemically about their practice and learn from experience
5. Teachers are members of learning communities

According to the NBPTS website, "there is a decade of research to support the impact that Board-certified teachers have on students. Students of Board-certified teachers learn more than their peers without Board-certified teachers."

Congratulations, Eliza!
