Where Interests Ignite: Middle School Clubs & Activities
Middle School is a time of tremendous growth and change, and extracurricular activities are a vital part of helping students explore their interests, build confidence, and discover new talents. From stage lights and garden beds to engineering challenges and creative writing, these opportunities offer students meaningful ways to connect with peers while following their curiosity.
Gardening Club
In Gardening Club, Latin teacher Anne Smith encourages students to get their hands dirty while learning about sustainability, ecosystems, and the science of plant life. Students plant seasonal vegetables, care for flowers, and maintain the garden beds on campus. In 2025, they were the only Middle School team to compete at the Philadelphia Flower Show, earning ribbons!
North Star Writing Club
In the North Star Writing Club, students learn to express themselves through creative and personal writing in a supportive, workshop-style setting. From short stories and poetry to journalism and opinion pieces, students craft original work while exploring voice, style, and structure. Members also have opportunities to submit pieces to school publications and contests.

Friday Clubs
Designed to complement academics, Friday Clubs are led primarily by Shipley faculty and meet every Friday, offering students a chance to unwind while trying something new. Club offerings have included Gardening, Simulation Game Design, Dungeons & Dragons, Coding, Chess, Lawn Games, and Soccer. In Roots & Shoots, part of an international program founded by Jane Goodall, students work together to design and carry out service projects that address local and global issues—most recently assembling toiletry kits for individuals experiencing homelessness.
