Middle School Launches New Overnight Learning Trips

In a meaningful extension of classroom learning, Shipley launched new overnight trips this spring for 7th- and 8th-grade students, designed to foster deeper engagement through real-world exploration. These journeys brought classroom learning to life, encouraging students to explore academic content through real-world contexts, deepen their curiosity, and reflect on their roles in a broader community. In the fall, a new three-day trip to Newport News, Virginia will offer sixth graders opportunities for community building and hands-on exploration of science and the arts.

After months of studying civil and human rights in history class, Shipley’s 7th grade took their learning to Washington, D.C. They explored Smithsonian museums and took a reflective nighttime tour of historic landmarks. The experience culminated in a powerful visit to the National Museum of African American History and Culture, where students connected classroom conversations to real stories and artifacts.

Broadway & Beyond: 8th Grade Visits New York City

During the eighth grade’s overnight trip to New York City, students toured the United Nations Headquarters, observing where world leaders collaborate and tying it directly to their studies of global issues and community. The trip hit a high note with a night at The Lion King on Broadway. A scavenger hunt throughout the city connected history, science, and art lessons with Shipley’s core values of courage, responsibility, grace, respect, and leadership.
