Disconnecting to Reconnect: Upper School Tests Phone-Free School Days

Beginning January 5, 2026, Shipley’s Upper School will implement a new cellphone-free school day policy, requiring students to store their phones from the first bell at 8:05 am until the end of the academic day at 3:15 pm. The decision follows a successful pilot this spring and is part of a broader commitment to student well-being, engagement, and community connection.

In May 2025, the Upper School conducted a three-day phone-free pilot, asking students to surrender their devices during the school day. Faculty reported a noticeable shift: classrooms were calmer, students more attentive, and shared spaces more socially dynamic. The new policy builds on existing structures in the Middle School and reflects national conversations around adolescent screen time and mental health.

Shipley plans to spend the fall engaging students and families through educational programming, dialogue, and support, helping to ensure thoughtful and inclusive implementation. “We believe that this new policy will enhance our students’ sense of connection and belonging,” said Head of Upper School Kris Ryan, “and that it will further our mission to help them be and become their best selves.”
