When it comes to extracurricular activities in the Upper School, variety is the name of the game. More than 75 clubs, student government committees, music ensembles, and affinity groups were available to Upper School
students in the 2024-2025 school year.
The approach to co-curriculars is intentionally student-centered. Many clubs are founded and led by students, with faculty who serve as mentors and collaborators offering guidance, encouragement, and logistical support. Time for activities is built into the daily schedule, giving every student the flexibility to explore their interests, pursue leadership, or try something new almost every day of the week. The range of offerings is expansive: from puzzle-solving and TV production to environmental activism and national business competitions. Students can join communities focused on STEAM, service, the arts, competitive academics, business and finance, well-being, and more. Some activities are playful and creative; others are structured and intensive. The following highlights offer a glimpse into the breadth and spirit of Shipley’s Upper School activities program.
Finance Forum
Students learn the basics of investing and apply the skills they learn in a virtually-simulated stock market competition. In the club’s inaugural year, students enjoyed a visit from former Vanguard CEO Tim Buckley, P’20, P’22, P’26, as well as a trip to hear from professors and students at LeBow College of Business and The Wharton School. Other business and finance clubs include Business Club, DECA, and Sports Business and Media Club.
Open Art Studios
The art studios are open almost every day of the week during the activities block. Students can immerse themselves in creative projects and work independently, exploring their artistic voice and developing their skills in various mediums. They gather to work, share ideas, and provide constructive feedback to one another. One day each week, art faculty offer guided art projects. Other creativity-fueled clubs include Ceramics Club and Storytelling and Social Drafting, modeled after the Moth storytellers series.
Spirit Squad
With performances at major school events like Super Saturday, pep rallies, and Swamp Night, the Spirit Squad brings energy and school spirit to our community. The group is open to all Upper School students—regardless
of previous dance or cheer experience. Student leaders play a large role in choreography and organization. Other sports-themed activities include Soccer Club, Ultimate Frisbee, and Yoga.
Simon’s Heart
Several clubs and organizations are dedicated to service and caring for others, focusing on causes like cancer research, animal rights, and adolescent mental health. Raising awareness for sudden cardiac arrest, the Simon’s Heart Club hosted a CPR Jukebox Marathon, welcoming students from 20 area schools
to Shipley. Participants aimed to complete 200,000 compressions in two hours.
Shipley TV
On-camera hosts, behind-the-scenes producers, editors, social media managers, and script writers—students do it all in the Shipley TV club. The group produces a series of broadcasts shared with the school community throughout the year.
