Dr. Sharron Russell and Jason van Schie — Universal Screening for Well-Being

Session Information:
Universal Screening for Well-Being

Universal screening of students in schools is wide-spread in the areas of reading, math, vision, and weight, but not for mental health and well-being. In an effort to normalize the screening of mental health, as well as provide vital information for the school about its students, Shipley has implemented a yearly screening of its 6th through 12th grade students. This online screening of well-being and flourishing, as well as anxiety and depression (including self-harm), is conducted each year to aid in the identification of individual and group strengths and challenges. The goal is to focus on developing skills to cultivate and leverage strengths, while directly addressing challenges, leading to greater overall student well-being and, potentially, to greater academic success as well. Early identification of social-emotional risk and protective factors allows for intervention and strategies to improve social-emotional skills. Improved social-emotional skills are predictive of improved academic achievement.

This year, Shipley will begin using FlourishDx/Flourishing at School to measure well-being at more regular intervals, as well as provide important feedback to students and colleagues. Join Sharron and Jason to discuss the overall process of the well-being screening and the innovative way in which FlourishDx collects and shares data.
