Who was your most influential teacher and why?
I think my most influential teacher was Dr. Rebholz. When I entered his class I was just beginning to enjoy math, but because of his engaging teaching, I left loving math. In many ways, his class and teaching lead to me choosing mathematics as my intended major.

What was your favorite class and why?
My favorite class was my sophomore history class. I normally do not love history, but studying European history felt new and exciting. The great moments, people, and ideas that brought us to where we are now deserve to be remembered and I believe that this class did a great job presenting them in a well-structured and understandable fashion.

What was your most memorable experience at Shipley?
My summer orientation was quite memorable. Going from a school in Center City to a school way out in the suburbs was quite a transition, but Shipley's kind atmosphere made it a memorable and comfortable summer.

Reflections about Shipley:
Although I entered Shipley quietly and left just as silently, I hope I am remembered for my continued improvement. Throughout my time at this school what really defined me is how I've changed. I came to Shipley just hoping to scrape by and left with ambition and direction; Shipley was certainly behind this change.

I think one of my most striking transitions has to do with how I view math. I’ve always enjoyed science but for some reason I just hated math. However, after my freshman year, I realized that I’m actually pretty good at math and that I really enjoy the intellectual challenge of it. I enjoyed getting into harder and harder math classes. The jump from Algebra 1 to Algebra 2 and from Standard to Honors were all quite memorable for me.

All of these changes have been facilitated by Shipley. If it were not for Shipley’s flexibility with regards to course choice I would not have been able to pursue these subjects. Shipley’s willingness and eagerness to allow me to follow my interests has set me up for success by giving me confidence in my abilities and intellectual curiosity. I know that with a Shipley education I will thrive in the challenging yet rewarding environment of college.
