Shipley's Sprouts and STEAM Department Earn Top Marks at Philadelphia Flower Show

Upper School students in the Shipley Sprouts horticulture club and the STEAM department submitted exhibits at the 2022 Philadelphia Flower Show, held at FDR Park from June 11-19. Both groups won top marks for their exhibits. The PHS Philadelphia Flower Show is the nation’s largest and longest-running horticultural event and features stunning displays by the world’s premier floral and landscape designers.

The Shipley Sprouts exhibited in the "Tablescape" category. The task was to “design a garden meant for entertaining; include edible plants and a space dedicated to eating” in a 10-foot by 10-foot area.

The Sprouts' design was titled “Moon Garden Masquerade,” with the following intent:
Planted to honor and nourish nocturnal creatures of all sizes, this moon garden blooms in the Great Lakes barrens, concealed by dunes and bathed in sunshine. Disguised as owls, bats, and moths, each year we gather here to dance and dine in the moonlight, celebrating the solstice with a midsummer masquerade.

The “Moon Garden Masquerade” earned a whopping 96 points (out of 100) and earned second place during both Wednesday and Friday judgings.

The STEAM department also exhibited for the first time this year. They competed in the "Garden Gates" category, with the task of designing “an entrance to an artist’s garden integrating a garden gate made from recycled or reclaimed material” in an 8-foot by 4-foot area.

STEAM’s final design was titled “Maira Kalman: Everyday Absurdity,” with the following intent:
Maira Kalman’s New York City garden is a space of ancestry and absurdity, with a bright and humid landscape reminiscent of her childhood home in Tel Aviv. Like many of her illustrations, this garden celebrates everyday objects, beckoning visitors to “find a seat” and watch the city’s inhabitants stroll by.

STEAM’s Garden Gate earned second place on Wednesday's judging and third place during Friday’s judging.
