Shipley Community Letter - November 2022

Fellow members of our Shipley community,

There is so much to be thankful for this year. I am especially grateful for all of the ways we have been able to come together as a community in celebration of our School and the enduring values that define it. We have honored long-time traditions and ushered in new ones, forged and strengthened connections with one another, and cultivated wonderful experiences for Shipley students and adults alike.

Yesterday, the entire school gathered for our All School Assembly, where we celebrated Thanks and Giving. It was wonderful to be together and to hear our students perform, share personal reflections of gratitude, and tell us about the different ways they have participated in service learning this year.

Today, our Thanksgiving Pack-Up brought together students, families, faculty, and staff in support of the greater good. The generosity of the Shipley community made possible the purchase, packing, and delivery of 325 Thanksgiving meals to families throughout the Philadelphia region… and we had a great time doing it! (View images from the pack-up as well as yesterday's All School Assembly in our online photo gallery.)

Serving a community unites a community, fosters a deeper sense of belonging, and connects us all to a purpose larger than ourselves—lessons so vital for our students.

Our mission calls us to inspire in students a desire for compassionate participation in the world. This begins with helping students develop and practice empathy throughout our curriculum, starting in PreK and continuing through senior year. We also provide opportunities for our students to act in their communities, supporting non-profits and institutions that serve the public good. In total, dozens of local organizations benefit from the efforts of our students.

I have written a few times this year about how on campus we seek to live our values and make them visible. I would like to invite you to share with us stories of how you are giving back to your communities or how those around you are doing the same. It is important to lift up these efforts—to celebrate them and to model for our students the importance and the variety of ways of being a compassionate participant in the world.

With sincere gratitude for all we have to be thankful for, and excitement for the ways in which we are giving back, I wish you and yours a happy and healthy Thanksgiving holiday.

Warmly,

Michael G. Turner
