Middle and Upper School Science Olympiad Teams Earn Medals at Regional Tournament

Shipley's Middle and Upper School Science Olympiad Teams competed in the Pennsylvania Southeast Region Science Olympiad Tournament on March 11 at Penn State Abington. ⁠

The Upper School team of Bambi Tang '23 and Richard Liu '25 placed 2nd in the Detector Building event, 3rd in the Remote Sensing event, and 3rd in the Fermi Questions event. ⁠

Nine Shipley US teams earned Top 11 finishes in their respective events, helping the full team place 8th overall out of over 30 schools and will advance to the State Tournament in late April.

The Middle School team's impressive performance at the regional event yielded 12 Top Four finishes:

3^rd Place - Crime Busters - Lilla & Izzy

3^rd Place - Green Generation - Lilla & Shea

4^th Place - Fast Facts - Lilly & Henry

4^th Place - Roller Coaster - Nicholas & Ethan
4^th Place - Rocks & Minerals - Lucas & Sanjay

The full Middle School Science Olympiad team placed 5th overall out of 20 schools and the A team will advance to the State Tournament, held at Penn State Altoona in late April.

Middle School Latin Students Recognized for Excellence in Latin

Shipley's Middle School Latin students took the 2023 National Latin Examination with over 100,000 students from around the world. Thirteen students earned Latin Award prizes and recognition for excellence. Middle School Latin students also competed in The Philadelphia Classical Society's 84th Annual Latin Week Competition - Traditional Artistry & Literary Projects on Classical themes. A total of 30 Middle School students won Latin Awards and recognition for excellence.

Beginning in sixth grade, students define their questions, then design experiments to help them answer these questions. Eighth graders recently traveled to Saunders Woods to do this work as part of their ecosystem assessment project—just one example of how authentic assessments create meaningful learning experiences.

The Gators ran with courage and grace, making a memorable first impression at this year's Penn Relay Carnival.
