Meet Maxwell '20

Activities & Positions:
I am the captain of the boys’ varsity squash team, one of the head editors of The Beacon (the school newspaper). I also play viola in the orchestra and am the president of the Math Club. I have been on the varsity squash team since eighth grade and played in the Upper School orchestra throughout all of Middle School and Upper School. I have participated in Math Club and The Beacon since 10th grade.

Favorite Club:
I really enjoy being a part of the editorial staff for The Beacon. Although it means taking on work, being on The Beacon staff forces you to interact with the community, be creative, and explore Shipley in new ways to produce a well-written article for each issue.

Favorite Class:
My favorite class at Shipley has been Latin throughout all of Upper School. I have really appreciated the knowledge and care that Mr. Rich brings to every Latin class. Because Latin is not taken by as many students as it should be (compared to other languages), the small class size of dedicated students has accomplished a lot over the past three years, and the skills I have learned in Latin have helped my thinking in other areas and classes. I enjoy the process of reading and translating ancient works each night, and it is a pleasure to see the complexity of the works increase as the interpretation becomes just as important as the translation. I am happy to consider myself a Latin scholar, and it is most definitely not a dead language as many non-Latin students say!

Favorite Shipley Memory:
It is very difficult for me to single out a specific memory at Shipley as a favorite. I think that the little things each day are what I find important and I appreciate. It is a great feeling to be comfortable walking into school each day, and I will always remember my times spent working with friends in the lounge, playing pickup basketball, and, of course, eating a great lunch!

Most Valuable Lesson Learned:
Self-advocacy is vital to success in Upper School. It is so important to talk to teachers when you have questions and talk to trusted adults when you have concerns. Taking action on behalf of yourself will keep you organized, focused, and in a great position to succeed. Shipley does a great job developing self-advocacy skills—this skill is incredibly important, and looking back on my high school experience, self-advocacy has helped me move forward.

Advice to New Students:
If I could give myself advice when I started at Shipley, I would emphasize self-advocacy, an open mind, and a willingness to explore and take chances. Some of my best friends came from being a part of a team and participating in different clubs. I would warn myself not to look to just getting by, but to always do my best. Find your passion and stick with it—for me it was squash, but there are so many great paths that Shipley offers to incoming students!
