I play both varsity lacrosse and basketball. I started playing lacrosse in 3rd grade, and I have been playing basketball for as long as I could remember. For my Senior year, I will be captain for both the basketball and the lacrosse teams, and this will be my second year as a lacrosse captain.
I am one of the Student leaders of the BSU, and my role and purpose are to spread awareness of the black culture in Shipley. I want the student body and faculty to not just highlight the trends and positives of our culture but open their eyes to who we are as people and ethnicity.
I have realized I have a true passion for history. This year I dove deep into the history of America and its timeline of cultural impacts. My teacher was Ms. Kobb, and she helped me improve my viewpoints on subjects that mattered most to me. The subject came naturally to me, but this year specifically I found enjoyment in what I was learning.
Favorite Shipley Memory:
Tied to Shipley, myself and a few of my classmates went to South Africa this past June on a history trip. We went on day adventures involving tours, museums, safaris, and spiritual areas. I was truly one of the greatest experiences of my life and I’m glad I jumped on the opportunity.
Most Valuable Lesson Learned:
Self-confidence drives anything you do. If you believe you can accomplish something, taking that extra step to push yourself and succeed is all you need. At Shipley, teachers want to fuel that self-confidence so that when you leave it will become second nature, and success will follow.
Advice to New Students:
My advice to my past self would leave your comfort zone. Life is built off challenges and difficulty, and if you become comfortable with being uncomfortable it will make those challenges easier. I would also say the same thing to any new students coming into Shipley that are fearful of anything. Participate in what you’re passionate about and push yourself in everything you do. Go to Super Saturday and Swamp Night, embrace your student body and the community at Shipley. It makes all the difference in your high school experience.
