Sean Legnini ’07: How Can Schools Shape a Better World?
About Sean Legnini ’07 A third-generation Shipley alumnus, Sean Legnini ’07 pursued a wide variety of interests while he was a student. After graduating from Shipley, he earned a bachelor’s degree in music and business from Northeastern University, a master’s degree in arts administration from Drexel University, and a second master’s degree in education from Cabrini University. In addition to working in all three fields, at a record label, a music-centered nonprofit organization, and Shipley, he launched a tech startup, with the aim of automating charitable giving through virtual goods in video games. He is currently a science and STEAM teacher in Shipley's Middle School.
How do you think schools can act as a force for positive change in the world? Personal growth happens through trial and experimentation, whether successful or unsuccessful, and that’s true for the world and its communities, too. Schools provide a safe and open place for us to go through that trial and experimentation without too much fear of failure. In that safe space, we can encourage students to push themselves beyond their boundaries and work with them to feel comfortable being uncomfortable. It is in those moments of trial and experimentation here in the classroom that they’ll create positive personal and communal growth that will radiate well beyond the Shipley campus.
How can we change educational systems to make an even greater impact? Systems of grading are set up to encourage correctness and not growth. So many students go through school, even in sixth grade, so focused on getting their “A,” getting into honors courses, and getting into the best college, that they forget to focus on the learning and growth that happens in classrooms. If we can rethink how we assess students, find a way to focus more on thinking processes rather than an ability to store and recall information, and alter our cycles and forms of feedback, we can bring students back to the focus on growth. Growth, as a skill, is a lifelong thing—once you have a handle on what it means to grow, it never goes away.
What responsibility do private schools have to be a force for positive change? Independent schools in particular are uniquely set up to be able to experiment with curriculum and pedagogy in a way that could really push what education looks like.
During Tim Lightman’s 12-year tenure as Head of Lower School, the annual Lower School musical has become an extracurricular staple, giving fourth and fifth grade students opportunities to perform as they build confidence, collaborate, and grow through the arts both on stage and behind the scenes.
Shipley’s Middle School offers extracurricular opportunities that spark curiosity, build confidence, and foster connection. From Friday Clubs and gardening to creative writing and theater, students explore interests, develop new talents, and strengthen community beyond the classroom.
Shipley’s Middle School Science Olympiad introduces students in grades six through eight to competitive science. Guided by teacher John Harris, the program blends hands-on problem solving with real-world application, inspiring curiosity in engineering, physics, biology, and more.
With more than 75 clubs, ensembles, committees, and affinity groups, Shipley’s Upper School provides students with daily opportunities to explore their interests, develop leadership skills, and build community through a wide range of extracurricular activities.
Richard Liu ’25 founded Shipley’s Mock Trial Club as a tenth grader. Now with more than 30 members, the club competes statewide while fostering skills in public speaking, analysis, and collaborative learning.
When Ian Craig stepped onto Shipley’s campus this summer as its 11th Head of School, he did so with a deeply rooted belief in the power of relationships and a steady commitment to what he calls “the work that matters.” With 20 years of experience as a head of school across a range of educational settings, Craig brings to Shipley not only expertise but also humility, humor, and heart. Shipley’s second annual Upper School STEAM Showcase featured student projects across disciplines, from robotics and video games to vertical gardens and wearable tech. The event highlighted creativity, innovation, and real-world problem-solving in Shipley’s growing STEAM program.
In 2024–2025, 19 Shipley students earned the Global Seal of Biliteracy, a nationally recognized credential demonstrating proficiency in English and another language. Students achieved this distinction in Spanish, French, and Mandarin.

Beginning January 5, 2026, Shipley’s Upper School will adopt a cellphone-free school day policy, building on a successful pilot and reflecting the School’s commitment to student well-being, engagement, and community connection.
