How Shipley Shaped Me
Shipley has prepared me for college and life by instilling a sense of personal integrity in me. I often find myself to be my own hardest critic, striving for excellence for no other reason than I want my work to be the best it can be. Shipley has also taught me to not fear taking risks. If I ever failed in a risk I took in the classroom, on the stage, or in practice, I knew I was surrounded by people who would accept my mistakes and help me learn from them.

During a conversation with a friend who attends private school in another state, I realized Shipley has a unique focus on strengthening the character of its students as well as their scholarly chops. I had not realized it in the moment, but over the course of my time at Shipley, I had been pushed to develop strong moral characteristics as well as a strong academic foundation.

Who was your most influential teacher and why?
My most influential teacher has been Mr. Simpson. He is equally smart and intelligent as he is passionate and whimsical. He strikes a beautiful balance between high expectations and a low-stress class format. He teaches history class in a way no one else can by framing the events we study a way that reveals their philosophical and poetic meaning as well as their historical significance. Discussions in his classes are enlightening, informative, challenging, and often hilarious. (He and I also love to talk shop about our favorite bands, I’ve found many of my favorite punk acts through his recommendations).

Most Memorable Experience
My experience with the theater productions has been my most treasured time at Shipley. From my very first year in sixth grade, I have been doing every production available to me. I have made some of my best Shipley friends through these shows and had a blast each time.

Plans for Fall 2018
I will be attending New York University.

What does “Courage for the Deed; Grace for the Doing” mean to you?
