Activities & Positions: What activities and sports are you involved in? How many years have you participated? Do you hold any leadership positions?

I have been at Shipley for 13 years. I am a rising senior. I am involved in the environmental club, softball, volleyball, as well as on the Admissions ambassador team. I have participated in the environmental club for 2 years now and will be the vice president this year. I have been on the softball and volleyball teams since middle school. This year I will be a captain for both.
Favorite Club: What’s your favorite club and why? What do you do in the club?
My favorite club that I have been a part of is, of course, the environmental club. Ever since my sophomore year I have been a huge advocate for plastic pollution and climate change. In the environmental club, we tackle these issues head on. We have worked booths at huge sporting events to raise awareness throughout the school. We also hear from speakers to get involved in the bigger community. For the next year, we plan to host plastic pick-ups and connect environmental issues with race and culture. 
Favorite Class: What’s your favorite class at Shipley? What do you like about the subject and the teacher? Did you always enjoy this subject, or did it take you by surprise?
My favorite class I’ve taken at Shipley was Biology. Going into Biology I was nervous because it was a harder level than I was used to. It was a class to really push me as a student. Ms. Willing, my teacher, was the absolute best teacher I could ask for. She was always open to helping me when struggling, or to converse about an interesting subject. After learning a little biology in middle school, I knew that it would fascinate me. However, I never knew how much it would interest me. 

Favorite Shipley Memory: What do you think of when you think of Shipley? What’s one of the best things you’ve experienced here?
When I think of Shipley, I think of an environment that has pushed me to be my best self. One of my favorite memories was my freshman year. I was the goalie for the girls' JV soccer team. We were winning by a significant amount and my team supported me and challenged me to score a goal. I remember running up the field knowing that each one of my teammates were supporting me. 
Most Valuable Lesson Learned: What have you learned during your time here?
The most valuable lesson I have learned at Shipley is self-advocacy. Shipley pushes you to reach out to your teachers when you are struggling and forces independence, in a good way. Another thing that I’ve learned at Shipley is time management…. 
Advice to New Students: What advice would you give yourself back when you started at Shipley? What tips would you pass on to new students? Are there any activities/traditions they should be sure to take part in?
…And that leads perfectly into what my advice to new students would be. Spend your time wisely. During my freshman year, I would procrastinate my work and spend study halls talking to my friends. But quickly I learned to use the given time wisely and it cut my homework load at home in half. I would also encourage students coming into the Upper School to participate in a fall sport. It is the best way to come into school knowing people in all grades. In addition, I would tell students to take a course or two to challenge yourself and push outside your comfort zone.
