Alumni Service Award Presented to Nancy Johnson Campbell '60 May 1, 2015

The Alumni Service Award is presented for outstanding volunteer service to The Shipley School by an alumna or alumnus, as demonstrated by strong loyalty, exceptional contributions of time and effort, and personal commitment to the advancement of the School’s mission.

Alumna Nancy Johnson Campbell, Class of 1960, was a Shipley lifer who was involved in student government, the arts and crafts club, political discussion club, and baseball. She was a member of the green team and was recognized in her senior yearbook for her friendly smile.

Mrs. Campbell began volunteering at Shipley in 1972, when her daughter, Nan Campbell Bussey '85, entered Kindergarten. Her humble nature meant Mrs. Campbell was more comfortable rolling up her sleeves than giving orders, and she volunteered in a multitude of roles, usually behind the scenes. From homeroom mother to team dinner host, she always made herself available to participate in the life of the School. One of Mrs. Campbell’s jobs was to “lunch-punch” in the cafeteria, which entailed punching holes in the paper lunch cards of students who purchased food. She was also involved in Shipley Shops and the “Shipley Today” admissions program. Wearing both her alumni and parent hats, she worked tirelessly as an advocate for Shipley’s Annual Fund, playing an important role in promoting philanthropy in the School community.

As a loyal member of the fabulous class of 1960, Mrs. Campbell has volunteered to host, and or plan, her reunion every five years for the past quarter century—and probably longer! She dutifully served on the Alumni Board, now the Alumni Council, for many years and has remained an active alumna who always attends various local and regional alumni events. For her steadfast loyalty, commitment, and her embodiment of “Grace for the Doing,” we are honored to present Nancy Johnson Campbell with Shipley’s 2015 Alumni Service Award.
