Shipley Sprouts Flourish at Philadelphia Flower Show, Earning Top Awards

The Shipley Sprouts, an Upper School horticultural club, celebrated their 40th year competing in the Philadelphia Flower Show by exhibiting an impressive collection of container gardens, flowering bulbs, and miniature landscapes. The Sprouts received a total of 86 awards for their entries, one of the best years the Shipley Sports has ever had.

“We had a phenomenal year,” said Michele Cruise, Sprouts advisor. “Every entry won a ribbon.”

In total, the Sprouts earned 27 Blue Ribbons, 20 Red, 17 Yellow, 3 Honorable Mentions, and 18 Class Commendations.

Elizabeth Solin, Maura Beachell, and Christy McMichael’s Miniature Landscape Garden won a Best in Show Special Rosette. The garden was inspired by the Everglades National Park, following the Show’s national park theme “Explore America.” It even caught the attention of celebrity green thumb Martha Stewart.

The Sprouts were also featured on the Philadelphia Horticultural Society’s blog.
