Katelyn Taylor: Creating Meaningful Experiences in Athletics

Look at the top of the NCAA Division II Women’s Lacrosse Career Goals Scored list and you’ll find Katelyn (Martin) Taylor at 299. Her resume also includes three-time All-American, 2006 NCAA DII Midfielder of the Year, Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Rookie of the Year in 2003 and Player of the Year in 2006. She was inducted into West Chester University’s Athletics Hall of Fame in 2017. Not bad for an unknown local lacrosse player who walked onto the team, just for fun.

She won’t offer that information herself—she’s too humble. While she is extremely competitive on the field, athletics isn’t about her, “it’s about being a part of something bigger than yourself.”

A quiet powerhouse in Shipley’s Athletic Department, Katelyn manages the moving parts of anywhere from 12-15 teams per season. She coaches, lends a hand teaching Physical Education, and oversees Summer Camps at Shipley. While that may seem chaotic—she sticks to her spreadsheets and checklists, plans for various scenarios, and thrives under pressure, all while presenting a calm demeanor.

On Shipley
Katelyn’s commitment and dedication to Shipley are evident through her roughly 90-minute drive to Shipley. Why the commute? “Because my children (Jake ’24, Abby ’34, and Ryan ’36) love it,” she said. “Their teachers, the community, the genuine care for each child.” Those relationships fuel her tank day after day.

Professionally, watching Shipley’s student-athletes grow and achieve their personal definition of success is her favorite part of the job. “There’s a place for everyone here—from Division I caliber athletes to students who prefer to help manage from the sidelines. My goal is for every student to thrive and graduate Shipley having had a meaningful experience in athletics.”

On Coaching
“I’m incredibly positive when it comes to coaching,” Taylor said. “I tell athletes three things they did well before I offer any constructive criticism.” Being a role model is paramount for Taylor—you won’t find her yelling at officials or throwing her hands up. “I hope how I handle myself on the sidelines helps our athletes become the best versions of themselves.”
